SGS College vs Derby College/Noel Baker School

The final game of the regular season for SGS saw them face Derby, going down 62-81 at the WISE Arena, SGS College.

Derby were looking to avenge the loss from earlier in the season and they did exactly that, behind six threes and 18 points from Charlie Woodyat, 22 points from Leighton Elliott-Sewell and 10 from Jrae Lue.

SGS were led by 16 from AJ Edu, 14 from Ebuka Ekwegh, and 9 from Corey Samuels.

In the first ten minutes both teams set a fast tempo with a multitude of transition baskets and early offence leading to a high scoring quarter. Ebuka Ekwegh’s back to back three pointers early on helped SGS develop an early lead, by the end of the quarter leading 25-18.

Derby made adjustments in the second quarter and with some different looks on the defensive end and extending their pressure they forced SGS to take shots they hadn’t in the first ten minutes.

The big shift for Derby was the introduction of Woodyatt for Derby, a sharpshooter who knocked down his first three of the game in this quarter, he ended up with six for the game. At half time Derby had it by one point 36-25.

In the second half, Derby continued where they left off and by extending their defence they caused too many problems for SGS to counter. Coupled with an injury to SGS star player AJ Edu and also to starting guard Oli Carey there was no way back for the home side, with Derby running out winners 81-62.

Coach for SGS Guy Coles reflected on the game and the season for SGS saying:

“This game typifies the season for SGS. There were great spells of basketball both on offence and defence but we weren’t able to be consistent for forty minutes.

“The first half showed that we could compete but unfortunately we couldn’t continue this for the whole game. Although it is a loss to finish the players represented themselves well today, a positive way to finish a tough season.”
