The Sheffield College 71 – 102 Charnwood College

The Sheffield College took on the current EABL champions Charnwood College, eventually falling to a 102-71 defeat.

Charnwood began to build their lead from the tip and raced out to a 22-13 advantage at the end of the 1st quarter. However, this was a big improvement for Sheffield compared to their previous match up against Charnwood, when the Riders had scored 40 1st quarter points.

Sheffield began to score the ball better in the 2nd quarter, putting up 20 points, however they also allowed Charnwood open looks on the 3 point line and were punished. The visitors scored 27 in the quarter to give themselves a bit of separation going into half time break, leading 47-33.

The second half was much the same story, with Sheffield again scored the ball well but allowed Charnwood too much room at the other end. 29 points in the 3rd and 24 in the 4th meant the hosts were outscored in both 2nd half frames, providing the Riders with a comfortable win.

Former teammates Greg Durand and Tom Morey led the scoring for their respective teams, with Durand enjoying 24 points for Charnwood and Morey with 25 for The Sheffield College.

Blaize Sagna and Max Gausand added 20 and 12 respectively for Charnwood. For Sheffield, Mahamud Ibrahim had 20 points & JJ Wright chipped in with 13.

Sheffield College coach Aidan Appleyard said: “I was very pleased with the way the boys played today. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy going up against a strong Charnwood team but I can’t fault the effort and drive.

“Everyone came into the game and contributed. We worked a lot on the defensive side of things this week and felt we made Charnwood work hard for their win.

“We now need to use the Christmas break to rest and come back stronger in 2020.”
