The Sheffield College 106 v 61 Newcastle Eagles Academy

Sheffield College started the new season with a win after a disappointing season a year ago, defeating Newcastle Eagles Academy 106-61 to move to 1-0.

After a slow start where Sheffield allowed 10 points in the first few minutes, the hosts  went through the gears and finished the opening quarter up 30-15. The advantage was a testament to some impressive defence as Sheffield didn’t allow more 16 points is any of the game’s quarters. From there, Sheffield never looked back as they ran out deserving victors.

After a 2 year absence through injury, Tom Morey came back bigger and better with a impressive 26 point performance on 11-15 shooting and 4-7 from range. Sheffield  enjoyed an impressive debut from Matteo Orecic with a 12 point, 11 rebound double-double on his 18th birthday and Juvainey Wright also featured in the top scorers with 13 points.

Sheffield’s Vice Captain Tom Oakley said: “We played the game for the full 40 mins and once we got past the first quarter, we didn’t look back. We played very well as a team as everyone scored and got meaningful minutes and touches. Hopefully we can keep this winning form going into our next game”

Head Coach Brad Connors said: “It was great to start the season with a win but we still have a lot of work ahead of us. It was great to see Tom Morey come back after a long lay off and put in a great performance.”

From Newcastle Sauveur Kande had well deserved 15 points, whilst Tyrese Nfon and Joe Moore had 12 and 10 points respectively.

Sheffield travel to Derby next week, hoping to make a 2-0 start to the season whereas Newcastle have to play a strong side in Myerscough.
